Scheduled Play

New Open Play Opportunities

By request, from our members that are still working or otherwise busy during the day, there will now be EVENING OPEN PLAY from 5-7 pm on courts 9-12. Come enjoy the cool evenings, fantastic sunsets and, of course, great pickleball with your Quail Creek neighbors.

In addition, we have added 2 hours of Open Play from 11-1 pm  following the Wednesday Round Robin for those who can’t play 6 games or who don't make it into the round robin which has been filling up quickly these days.

Organized Play

All events are on CourtReserve.  We have added a new Women’s Only 3.75 for those advanced women who are just not quite ready or wanting to play 4.0.  It is on Fridays at 11 if you are interested.

Reminder:  Please, only one registration in Prime Time and withdraw from any events that you cannot attend so others can move up from the waitlist. You have all been great with this but a friendly reminder all the same.  Thanks!

Scheduled Play information is linked on CourtReserve Announcements.

Residents who play in private matches during Prime Time must be members of QCPC.

It is the responsibility of the organizer of the private match to make sure that residents they are inviting to play are members of QCPC.

If you have people in your Prime Time group who are not members of QCPC, encourage them to join. It is only $25 for the year and helps to pay for pickleballs and other court enhancements.

NEW! Footwork Clinic

Instructor:  Karen Morse, IPTPA Certified Instructor

Join us for an energetic 10-session clinic, 2 classes a week over a 5 week period, designed to teach you proper pickleball footwork so you'll always be in the right place at the right time. You'll also master fundamental pickleball strategy and develop the mental skills needed to elevate your game and have more fun.

Each 2-hour session includes a warm-up, footwork drills, shot mechanics instruction, targeted practice drills, and live game play to apply your new skills. Throughout the clinic, we'll integrate Pickleball Therapy—training the mental aspects of the game that make the difference between good and great players.

Requirements:

  • Interested members must attend an informational meeting at the Lower Meeting Ramada on Wednesday, February 18, from 1:30 - 3:00. Please bring your calendar to make sure you can commit to 10 sessions over 5 weeks.  Registration process and instructions will be provided at this meeting.

  • Court shoes must be worn. (running shoes and casual athletic shoes are not permitted).

  • Eye protection/sunglasses and a brimmed hat.

  • Have water for hydration with you on court.

  • Commitment to attend all 10 sessions—each one builds on the previous sessions, so consistency is essential.

  • Know the rules of Pickleball, and be able to keep score.  You must have attended beginning Pickleball drills/instruction and/or played for at least 6 months.  This clinic is NOT appropriate for players just starting their Pickleball journey.

There will be 2 different groups available for these clinics:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00AM - 9:00AM beginning on February 24.

  • Wednesdays and Fridays from Noon - 2:00PM beginning on February 25.

Volunteers Always Needed

There is continued strong interest in the classes offered by the QCPC Player Development, with most classes consistently full with a waitlist.

Good news! We have just added additional courts and volunteers for 2.0 Assisted Play and 2.5 Assisted Play starting the week of February 16!

Please remember, the majority of classes we offer are run by volunteers. Additional volunteers are always needed and greatly appreciated. Please contact Al Wascher, allanwascher@gmail.com, if you have interest in joining our team of volunteers.

Q-TIPS / FEBRUARY 2026

Pickleball Strategies: Mastering the First Five Shots

Gary Quantz, USA/PPR Certified Pickleball Instructor

Did you know that over 70% of points are won within five or fewer shots at the 3.0 to 3.5 level of play? This includes the serve and return. On average, most rallies only last three shots after the serve and return are successfully made. Players at lower levels often see even shorter rallies, as serves and returns may not be consistently kept in play.

Advancing Your Game Beyond the Initial Shots

As players become skilled at the first four to five shots of a rally, pickleball evolves into a game of advanced strategies. Mastering these opens the door to techniques such as dinking, resetting, volleys, and lobs. Once the initial shots are consistent, players can begin learning how to play strategically at the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ) and progress toward mastering the overall game. The risk in these opening shots diminishes, and longer rallies become more common.

Key Strategies for Early Rally Success

Focus on the first four to five shots that start each point. Build confidence and consistency in how and where you hit these shots. By mastering these opening shots, you elevate your game. Remember: every shot successfully sent over the net must be returned by your opponents. With each ball that crosses, you increase your chances of winning the point.

Breakdown of the First Five Shots

1st Shot: Improve your serve. This is the only shot you completely control. Take your time and practice hitting the ball in and deep.

2nd Shot: Work on your return of serve. Practice both forehand and backhand groundstrokes, aiming for consistency and depth. Target the middle of the court. For slower players, hit deep and with loft to move up to the NVZ quickly and join your partner.

3rd Shot: Decide whether to "Drive" or "Drop." Consistency and accuracy in groundstrokes are key. If opponents stay back, drive deep. If both are at the NVZ, learn to master the drop shot—an essential skill for advancing to the 4.0 level or higher.

4th Shot: The Pressure Shot. After serve, return, and drive/drop, ideally you should be at the kitchen line, ready to apply pressure. When opponents drive at you, try to drive or volley back at their feet or into open space. Be cautious of two common mistakes:

1.   Not applying pressure when the opportunity arises. If you receive a shot at chest height or higher, attack it with a volley. Don’t let it bounce below the net, otherwise you'll need to dink or drop defensively.

2.   Applying pressure incorrectly. When faced with a well-placed drop shot you must let bounce, respond with a drop or dink to avoid being attacked.

5th Shot: Now at the kitchen line, focus on dinking, punch, or block volleys. Practice these repeatedly. As you improve, add dink lobs, roll volleys, flick volleys, and other net play strategies.

Conclusion

Work on the four to five opening shots that start each point. Build confidence and consistency. Mastering these shots will help you advance your game. Remember: every successful shot over the net must be returned—each one gives you a better chance to win the point.

Congratulations!

Debi Vail and Bob Girouard took home a silver medal at the USA Pickleball Golden Ticket tournament in Glendale, AZ this last month. They played in the 4.0 level, 70-74 age bracket.

657 players competed in this tournament, which consisted of 3.0-5.0 level players from 19+ to 70+ age groups. Gold Medalists are qualified to play in the USA Pickleball National Championship.
